The OPPO A5 2020 Tested: Excellent Battery Life, Good Cost

Should Oppo be a new company to you then perhaps you are unsure whether Oppo makes quality devices. Don't fear, however, for the company is well established in its homeland and has spent a few years building up to the release in Europe & elsewhere, with quality phones such as Oppo Reno 10X already making an splash.

Oppo A5 2020 does not purport to be a flagship handset, but it sure does deliver a nice set of specification with an affordable price. So if you have been eyeing up the Motorola G8 Plus or even a Moto One series handset, then the general savings given by A5 (2020), and its big battery, all make a case to purchase.

Oppo's A5 2020 Screen & Design

Dimensions: 163.6mm x 75.4 mm x 9.1mm
Weight: 195g
Finishes: Mirror Black, Dazzling White
Screen: 6.5 inch LCD, 1600 x 720 res
3.5mm headphones jack
Back finger print scan sensor

With no immediate indicators the The Oppo A5 2020 is a entry-level phone. The semi-reflective back, emblazoned with the Oppo logo transfer & the words "designed for A-series", comes with a understated sheen, while its cameras unit & back fingerprint scanner have been positioned in a neat form. The problem is, the black color of this model which is more of a gray, really is easy to get dirty, & we found that scanner a little high in its placement and too close to the cameras.

Yet the same can also be said the front 6.5-inch screen is big, but not awkward, and is held together with trim bezel on the top and side edges & just a tiny extra towards the lower part. there's a dewdrop looking notch out of the screen, which is where the selfie camera is, but it's not distracting and has not been a bother for any apps that we've been assessing. On top of this is a small speaker grille, which is good when making phonecalls, something we've discovered not to always be the case with, say, other handsets with a similar layout.

Yet, the display is not the highest resolution, giving HD+ resolution. That's like the 720p televisions of old, & while it does not appear awful in its depiction of details, a Full HD+ screen, like you have with Motorola's G8 Plus. Indeed, the device is marginally cheaper than that Motorola, however the extra pixels would help make a improvement.

There is another frustration with the handset's display: remove the plastic screen protector (just as we do with all review phones) and that top layer isn't the greatest at preventing fingerprint marks, & this is a thing we've rarely looked at since the Huawei P10. This does not spoil your the phone, however you may catch some more rainbow smears than you'd want to.

Elsewhere the OPPO A5 2020 is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, so there's no reason you can't plug headphones in, while its lower speaker is great when producing sound for tones and movies.

Oppo A5 2020 Performance & Battery

Snapdragon 665 CPU
3GB RAM
64 GB on board storage
MicroSD expandable
5000mAh battery
USB C port
ColorOS 6.0 Android based

Maybe the most impressive thing about The Oppo A5 2020 is its battery lifespan. As the body not being too thick, it is a big 5000mAh battery in this device. Considering the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 is just 3,400mAh by comparison, you can see potential for just how much more battery capacity this phone can offer.

Over the few days that we've been using A5 2020 , it's been delivering about 28 hours of use per charge. If you're not constantly on your phone That is going to give 2 days of use. If you're using the phone a lot, playing games & other apps, well then you will get a full day's use no worries.

Battery charging isn't ultra quick, but it is via USB-C, not the Micro USB that quite a few previous generation handsets.

Battery life is assisted by a few features: the screen, as we've found, is not the best resolution display available; and the processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, isn't the most powerful chipset on the block.

Considering the previous point, however, this is not a big limitation because we've been able to play games like Archero with no clunkiness, and while the main title South Park: Phone Destroyer has been lag-free and with good scrolling. And, this chip is the same processor you'll find in the Motorola G8 Plus.

and the chipset & amount of RAM (at 3GB), can at times let the phone down. Whether that is a just a few seconds wait for an app to load, or a brief hang while your game is getting ready, it's only these tiny issues that make one know you are not making use of a flagship phone.

The operating system is Oppo's long-established ColorOS, which based on the Google Android operating system, upon which ColorOS sits, and Oppo has made their own updates. Because of this we don't find the user interface as clear as an Android device. Things such as numerous notifications from the phone's battery management, every app being layed out over a few pages and notifications we found frustrating.

That being said, there are some good features such as fingerprint/face locking app for safety, much customisation within notifications, a side-swipe quick-access favourite apps panel, & app duplication to allow you to use of the Dual SIM , yet the system will not draw in backups for the second app.

Using 2 SIM cards also does not disallow the possibility of expanding on the 64GB of storage, as there's a dedicated microSD card slot. Very handy if you want heaps of photos, videos and apps on your device - an extra 64GB is unlikely to cost more than a tenner.

Oppo A5 2020 Camera

Cameras:
Main: 12MP, f/1.8 aperture
Ultra-wide: 8MP, f/2.25 aperture
Two 2 mega-pixel depth sensors, f/2.4
Front Facing Cmaera: 8MP, f/2.0

Camera-wise, The OPPO A5 2020 the quad camera system, however with two of rear cameras being depth sensors, and the ultra-wide camera does not function think of the setup as simply a single camera setup.

The camera app is a not the fastest, but it isn't too bad considering this is an entry level device. We have had no worries shooting even in low-light environments, & close up works well. this is a bit of a rarity in a few smartphones and camera systems.

There are not many bells & whistles though. Yes, you have HDR to level out the shadow and to highlight the details, but you will not have anything to cater for low light shooting &, like we say, there's no wide option available.

There is a 2x and 5x digital zoom, which crops into pictures, and manages and gives a 12MP final result. And as for the ultra-wide camera, the website states "for panoramic pictures", so I presume that this sensor is mainly for panoramics, even with the angle of view in this mode is not wide. Most confusing.

Most of the pictures we've snapped with the phone's main camera will have ample appearance in good light, but low light causes inevitable softness. And yet, for viewing on a phone display or to share on social media, that's acceptable.

On the front, there's an 8MP camera which has the usual glut of Oppo's smoothing & face-thinning effects which, we're happy to never use. Each to their own, though, we know there are fans of the 'beautification' options.

Our Result

And if you're wanting an cheap handset there are many choices, Oppo A5 2020 is amongst them. Its battery life is great, with nearly 2 day {life|between charges, and its display is {large|huge|good sized, and the processor well equipped to deal with tasks & playing media.

With that being said, the screen could be better & better resistant to marks, the rear camera is a total oversell, (treat it as a single 12MP main), & some will think the software finicky.

As for the money{, however,|you pay for this phone it goes smoothly, and the design is spot on, & there's all the signs of a good Motorola G8 Plus competitor here. Plus, the A5 2020 is not as highly priced.

Oppo's A5 2020 is either more nor less than the twin brother of the OPPO A9 (2020) because it has in common with it the most benefits: 6.5 inch screen, Snapdragon 665 CPU, 5,000 mAh battery, quad lens rear camera.
